Biomedical imaging technologies

This program designs optimised imaging analysis techniques using expert knowledge of image acquisition processes. A group of researchers with close collaborative links to clinical and preclinical biomedical research programs works to derive informatics approaches from understanding the anatomy, physiology, biophysics and engineering that underpins each specific imaging modality.

Capabilities

  • Image processing and analysis.
  • Computer vision.
  • Statistical signal processing.
  • Image-based computational biomechanics.
  • Functional brain image analysis (fMRI and near-infrared spectroscopy).
  • Morphometric analysis methods.
  • Diffusion-weighted MRI techniques.

Facilities

  • Scanco µCT, a cone-beam microCT (Melbourne School of Engineering)
  • Bruker 4.7T small animal MRI scanner (Florey Institute).
  • Hyperspectral imaging (The University of Melbourne).
  • Siemens PET/CT scanner (The University of Melbourne/Florey Institute).
  • Siemens 7T MRI scanner (The University of Melbourne/Florey Institute).

Impact

Analysis techniques applied to improve understanding of a range of diseases and disorders, including epilepsy, osteoarthritis, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, traumatic brain injury, schizophrenia and autism
