Computational modeling for cardiovascular disease

Leading researchers in engineering and cardiology are collaborating to develop medical technologies which will lead to optimum solutions for coronary diseases that affects many people every year. Our research aims to understand and address all medical questions associated with coronary heart disease.  Utilising state-of-the-art high performance supercomputers, high fidelity simulation is carried out to understand behaviour of blood flow and the associated build up of plaque in the coronary arteries.

Capabilities

  • 3D reconstruction of human arteries using medical imaging modalities.
  • Computer reconstruction of stent implanted in human arteries.
  • High fidelity simulation of pulsatile, non-Newtonian blood flow.

Impact

  • Developed methodology to reconstruct three dimensional computer models of arteries using medical imaging modalities.
  • Formulating advanced computer model to perform more realistic simulation of blood flow in arteries.
  • Elucidating the physical mechanisms of plaque formation in patient specific geometries.
