Abstract:
Organ-on-Chip models offer a human-relevant approach to biomedical research, addressing key limitations of conventional in vitro systems and animal models. By recreating human tissue physiology in a controlled environment, they can reduce, and increasingly replace, animal use while generating data more directly relevant to human biology. Yet complexity brings challenges in reproducibility, robustness and throughput. Using blood–brain barrier and vascularised tumour models, this talk explores how standardisation and automation can enable robust, reproducible research at scale.

The talk will also explore nanoparticle formulation for advanced therapeutics, where reproducibility and translation from early research to larger-scale development remain major challenges. Together, these approaches show how better control over both how therapeutics are made and how they are tested can strengthen the reproducibility and translational value of biomedical research.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Dr Sasha Berdichevski is a biomedical scientist and industry leader specialising in the translation of Organ-on-Chip and New Approach Methodologies from research into real-world adoption. Her work bridges academic science and industry application, with a focus on advanced human tissue models and the standardisation needed to scale these technologies into robust laboratory tools.
